The Reading Circles project presents a thoughtful approach to creating public spaces that encourage reading and community interaction. Located in urban environments, the design comprises three distinct, modular reading circles. Each module serves a functional purpose while promoting a welcoming environment for visitors. The overall concept focuses on providing intimate settings that foster connections among users, highlighting the importance of books and collaboration.

Modular Design and Functionality

The three reading circles are designed to work both independently and as a cohesive unit. Each module has its own function, contributing to the collective goal of promoting social interaction and book exchange. Arranged in a circular format, the modules create an inviting atmosphere where visitors can engage with each other. The configuration supports a range of activities, from exchanging books to enjoying moments of quiet reflection.

User-Centric Features

In addition to reading circles, the project includes a separate bike stand module, enhancing the functionality of the overall design. Users can easily attach the bike stand to any singular reading module or integrate it within a reading circle. This feature reflects a consideration for the practical needs of urban users, encouraging cycling and making it easier to access the reading spaces. By addressing various transportation options, the design promotes a healthier lifestyle and community engagement.

Materiality and Construction

The structure incorporates solid wooden beams and pillars, paired with bent plywood. These materials create a sturdy yet inviting framework, linking the design to natural elements. The choice of wood contributes to an overall warm aesthetic, reinforcing the idea that reading is a calming and enjoyable experience. The durability of these materials ensures longevity while maintaining visual appeal.

Lighting and Atmosphere

Lighting is an essential aspect of the design, featuring LED lights integrated into the base of each module. This setup ensures that the space remains inviting and usable during evening hours. The careful placement of lights creates an atmosphere conducive to reading and relaxation, encouraging visitors to spend time in the space. With these choices, the project provides an environment where people can truly immerse themselves in books.

Every detail in the Reading Circles focuses on creating a unique space that celebrates reading and community. The combination of functional design and user-friendly features offers a practical solution for urban settings, inviting people to engage with literature and one another.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
