A basalt spine extends into the landscape, creating a dramatic overlook that connects visitors to the unique volcanic formations of the Dimmuborgir lava fields while serving as an educational visitor center.
5 key facts about this project
01
A dramatic overlook extends beyond the building's footprint, providing unique views of the black lava fields.
02
The design incorporates a central spine that harmonizes with the site's topography for seamless navigation.
03
Predominantly uses locally sourced basalt to reflect the geological character of the surrounding landscape.
04
Upper and lower levels offer distinct functions, enabling efficient visitor access to amenities.
05
Light pilotis support the tongue and entrance canopy, minimizing the building's environmental footprint.

The Iceland Black Lava Field Visitor Center is situated in the Dimmuborgir lava fields, a region characterized by unique volcanic formations in Iceland. The center provides an important space for visitors to learn, gather, and enjoy the natural beauty around them. The design is centered around a main spine, which follows the contours of the land, guiding people as they explore the area and minimizing impact on the landscape.

Spatial Organization

The building consists of two levels. The upper level features public spaces and support services, while the lower level contains practical facilities. This division allows visitors needing restrooms or showers to access these areas without entering the main public spaces, making the overall experience more efficient. A small staircase and sloped walkways connect the two levels, ensuring accessibility for everyone.

Interaction with Nature

One of the key elements of the design is a prominent overlook at the eastern end of the spine. This overlook protrudes beyond the building's footprint, providing an excellent view of the surrounding black lava fields. It serves as a visual guide for visitors on the hiking trails nearby. Light pilotis support the entrance canopy and the tongue, which helps to lessen the building's presence on the rugged terrain, allowing for a harmonious connection to the landscape.

Materiality and Light

Material choice is significant in this project. The use of basalt reflects the volcanic origins of the landscape, creating a connection between the building and its environment. Inside, birch is used, which contributes to a lighter feel in the public spaces. This choice also supports sustainability by reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting materials. The design takes advantage of natural light through large windows, which illuminate the spine and various internal areas, enriching the overall visitor experience.

Design Detail

By carefully balancing materials and light, the design creates a nuanced environment. The darker, textured areas in the spine contrast with the brighter finishes in the upper-level spaces. This approach not only addresses practical needs but also strengthens the connection between visitors and the stunning landscape of the Dimmuborgir lava fields. As people move through the center, they remain aware of the natural beauty that surrounds them, enhancing their overall experience.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
