Basalt Monoliths Embracing Geothermal Warmth in a Geological Landscape

Project in-detail

Emerging from the volcanic landscape, basalt monoliths frame warm bathing areas that offer visitors a unique connection to the geological features of the Vogagjà Fault.
5 key facts about this project
01
Basalt monoliths are integrated into the landscape, reflecting local geological characteristics.
02
Warm bathing areas are designed to utilize geothermal heat from the fault.
03
Pathways connect indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing visitor interaction with nature.
04
An observatory offers panoramic views, emphasizing the relationship between architecture and landscape.
05
Access to the nearby Grjótagjá caves highlights the project's geological context.

The project "Of Stone & Water" is located in the unique setting of the Vogagjà Fault, an area shaped by volcanic activity and the convergence of two tectonic plates. It combines natural landscapes with architectural elements to emphasize the relationship between geology and water. The design invites visitors to explore and connect with the site, creating a space that integrates functionality with the distinct geological features of the environment.

Conceptual Development

The design explores the themes of stone and water, reflecting the geological narrative of the location. Two monoliths made of basalt arise from the ground, each serving a specific purpose. One monolith faces the geological feature, acting as a visual tribute to the details of the rock formation. The other stands tall, focusing on the relationship between the built structure and the elements of water and landscape.

Spatial Experience

Visitors are guided through pathways that alternate between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a varied sensory experience. This thoughtful arrangement allows people to engage with the surroundings on multiple levels. Walking through the site becomes an exploration of both architecture and nature, enriching visitors' understanding of the geological context.

Architectural Features

A key element is the basalt tower that houses a warm bathing area. Here, warmth and intimacy form a welcoming atmosphere. The presence of water vapor alongside the mineral walls enhances this inviting space. It serves as a central feature, combining comfort with the geological character of the site.

Connection to Landscape

An elevated observatory offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape. This structure encourages visitors to contemplate the beauty of the geological formations and the natural environment. The observatory reinforces the idea that the project connects human experiences with nature.

Inside the bathing area, a play of warm water and stone creates a unique sensory experience. The steam interacts with the mineral walls, adding to the distinct atmosphere of the space and inviting quiet reflection amidst the striking landscape.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
