Basalt Mass with Translucent Panels Embracing the Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

A substantial basalt mass integrates with translucent panels, capturing light and shadow while providing a dynamic educational space that connects visitors to the surrounding Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The museum's design incorporates natural basalt as the primary structural element.
02
Translucent sandwich panels allow for optimal light diffusion throughout the interior.
03
The rooftop plaza provides direct views of Hverfjall Volcano and Myvatn Natural Baths.
04
The building's layout encourages visitor interaction with both the exhibits and the landscape.
05
The integration of light and shadow creates a dynamic atmosphere within the museum.

The Iceland Volcano Museum, titled "A Dance of Light & Dark," is located near the impressive Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland. As both an educational and cultural space, the museum delves into the contrasts found in this unique landscape. The design concept focuses on the relationship between the solid black mass of volcanic rock and the lighter elements that characterize the region, such as the Northern Lights and the steam from hot springs.

Architectural Expression
At the heart of the building is a substantial black mass that serves as its main structure. This element reflects the geological strength and weight of the surrounding landscape. In contrast, the lighter, more fluid areas of the design are represented by a mint color, which evokes a sense of movement and openness. The combination of these contrasting forms creates a dialogue that shapes the building’s presence within its environment.

Spatial Organization
The design features a well-organized layout that enhances the visitor experience. Upon entering, people encounter the striking contrast between the heavy black mass and the soft, translucent surfaces. The lobby functions as the main entry point, giving access to various facilities such as the front desk, café counter, and viewport benches, all crafted from the same mint material to maintain a consistent theme of lightness throughout the space.

Materiality and Sustainability
Materials play a significant role in reinforcing the design's narrative. Native basalt building stone forms the bulk of the structure, grounding it within the geological context. The lighter areas use tinted, translucent sandwich panels, allowing natural light to filter in while improving energy efficiency. This thoughtful selection of materials enhances the sensory experience and supports a more sustainable approach to architecture.

Visitor Engagement
The design includes a rooftop plaza that offers elevated views of notable landmarks, including Hverfjall Volcano and the Myvatn Natural Baths. This feature enriches the visitor experience by connecting the museum to its stunning surroundings. Visitors can appreciate not only the architecture but also the landscape that defines it.

In the museum, the interplay of solid and fluid forms creates a balanced architectural statement, where light and shadow interact across the surfaces. This dynamic captures the essence of Iceland’s natural beauty, allowing visitors to feel a connection to the dramatic landscape that surrounds them.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
