The Dimmuborgir Visitor Center is located in Iceland, an area known for its unique geological formations and rich legends. The center serves as an entry point for visitors, allowing them to explore the captivating landscape and connect with the local culture. The design features a circular shape that encourages community interaction while harmonizing with the enchanting surroundings.

Conceptual Framework

The circular layout includes an internal courtyard designed to promote gathering and connection. This sheltered space invites visitors to engage with their surroundings and learn about the history embedded in the land. By fostering interaction, the courtyard becomes a vital part of the experience, strengthening the bond between the building and the landscape.

Spatial Navigation

The design incorporates pathways that guide visitors through the center, encouraging exploration. These winding routes introduce moments of surprise and discovery as individuals navigate the space. Careful attention has been paid to accessibility, with a gentle slope connecting the car park to the entrance, making the center easy to approach regardless of mobility.

Materiality and Integration

Materials used in the visitor center reflect the local environment. Basalt and wood feature prominently in the design. The basalt pays homage to the area's volcanic terrain, establishing a visual connection to the surroundings. In contrast, wood adds warmth and a welcoming feel. Together, these materials support the goal of blending the building with the natural landscape while serving practical purposes.

Symbolism and Heritage

The design also emphasizes the concept of "ground heritage," recognizing the importance of the site’s history. The visitor center serves as a narrative space, incorporating elements from local folklore and geology. Stone arrangements in the courtyard symbolize the cultural significance of Dimmuborgir, inviting visitors to contemplate the stories that shape the land.

The internal courtyard offers an arrangement of stones that encourages interaction and exploration. Visitors can engage physically with the landscape while remaining at the center of the building. This feature allows individuals to connect more deeply with the unique geological identity of Dimmuborgir, enriching their overall experience.
