Basalt Facade and Green Roof Define Retreat Near Hverfjall

Project in-detail

A rugged basalt façade and an extensive green roof create a unique retreat near Hverfjall, offering visitors a connection to the dramatic volcanic landscape while enjoying the comfort of a restaurant and multipurpose space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rugged basalt façade reflects local geological features.
02
Extensive green roof references traditional turf house design.
03
Panoramic glazing maximizes views of the surrounding landscape.
04
Custom "rail-wall" system allows for flexible space usage.
05
Skylights provide illumination and views of the Aurora Borealis.

The design is situated in the unique landscape of Lake Mývatn, located near Hverfjall Volcano. Functioning as a restaurant and retreat, the building aims to foster a connection between the harsh natural environment and the welcoming nature of human-made space. The overall concept encourages visitors to appreciate both the surrounding volcanic landscape and the comfort of shelter.

Façade and Structural Design

The exterior features a rugged basalt façade, which serves a dual purpose. It not only acts as a barrier against the elements but also visually relates to the local geology. This choice creates a sense of continuity with the landscape, anchoring the structure in its environment. The building’s sculptural form enhances its connection to nature, reflecting the beauty of its volcanic surroundings.

Interior Environment

Inside, the design integrates wood extensively, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere. This material choice contrasts with the exterior's starkness, inviting occupants to engage with their surroundings. The combination of wood and greenery fosters a pleasant sensory experience, blending the interior and exterior into a cohesive whole.

Functional Spaces

The layout includes a flexible multipurpose hall with a unique "rail-wall" system, allowing for adaptable use of the space. This feature accommodates various events and gatherings, supporting the diverse needs of visitors. The restaurant area is complemented by a greenhouse that connects through large glass panels, ensuring unblocked views of the landscape outside.

Natural Light and User Engagement

Skylights placed throughout the building enhance natural light, improving the overall ambiance. This design choice also allows occupants to observe natural wonders, such as the Aurora Borealis, adding another layer to the experience. The greenhouse includes shelves that are designed for easy access to produce and to maximize sunlight exposure. This focus on user-friendly design emphasizes the connection between people and nature.

The building not only provides shelter but also enriches the experience of its users, creating a space that feels connected to the landscape and offers comfort in a dramatic environment.
