The Black Lava Fields Visitor Center integrates with the volcanic landscape, providing a space for visitors to connect with the natural environment. Located in an area known for its distinctive lava formations, the center has a dual purpose: to serve as an educational hub and a communal gathering space. The design seeks to create a journey from the access road to the lava field, enhancing the experience of those exploring this unique geological setting.

Design Concept

The structure is designed to resemble a crater, reflecting the local geological features. This concept creates a strong link between the building and the natural processes of the area. The circular shape of the Visitor Center allows for an effective arrangement of spaces while offering a central courtyard that shields visitors from the wind. This courtyard features a communal fireplace, which encourages social interaction among visitors before or after their explorations.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the center includes several key areas, such as an information center, exhibition space with interpretative panels, a café, and a children's playground. Each area is designed to engage visitors, blending indoor and outdoor experiences. A roof terrace gives access to views of the surrounding volcanic landscape, enriching the connection between visitors and their environment.

Materiality

The design uses a limited selection of materials that echo the local landscape. Concrete forms the main structure, while textured basalt lava stone layers, black anodized aluminum, basalt lava stone tiles, and brass metal are incorporated to create visual and tactile links with the surrounding environment. This choice of materials aligns with the intent to harmonize the building with its geographic context while ensuring durability in the volcanic climate.

Experiential Journey

Visitors navigate the center through clearly defined pathways that facilitate exploration. The design strategically places vantage points throughout the building to enhance the experience of the dramatic volcanic views. The progression through the center leads to the communal courtyard, which acts as a focal point. Here, visitors can gather and appreciate the beauty of the area, fostering a sense of community and connection to the landscape.

Natural light filters through the façade, creating a pleasant atmosphere within the internal spaces. The building's design emphasizes the relationship between indoor and outdoor, allowing visitors to appreciate both the constructed environment and the surrounding natural beauty.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
