Basalt Columns Framing Hydroponic Dining in Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Rising from the Icelandic landscape, basalt columns frame a hydroponic dining experience that connects guests to the agricultural roots of their meals.
5 key facts about this project
01
Basalt columns echo the region's geological features while providing both structure and aesthetic value.
02
Hydroponic systems allow diners to enjoy fresh, locally grown crops in a visually engaging space.
03
The elevation changes enhance views of Mývatn Nature Baths and Hverfjall volcano from multiple dining areas.
04
Livestock integrated into the design contributes to energy generation for the greenhouse.
05
A unique combination of dining and agricultural functions fosters a strong connection between food and nature.

The OASIS | GREENHOUSE RESTAURANT is located near Mývatn Nature Baths in Iceland and serves as a dining space that incorporates agricultural elements. The design seeks to connect visitors with the surrounding landscape by highlighting the region's unique geology. Inspired by basalt columns formed by volcanic activity, the project blends functional spaces with natural features to create a rich dining experience.

Geological Inspiration

The design emphasizes the visual characteristics of basalt columns, which are known for their hexagonal shapes. These columns are arranged to reflect the randomness found in nature while providing structural support. Some columns rise to create they provide space above, adding to the complexity of the environment. This arrangement invites diners to engage with the space, making the experience more enjoyable and reflective of the local geology.

Integration of Space

At the heart of OASIS is the merging of dining and cultivation areas, allowing guests to dine surrounded by hydroponically grown crops. This setup encourages patrons to think about where their food comes from, fostering a connection to agriculture. By blending the dining experience with elements of farming, the design highlights the importance of sustainability and promotes an understanding of local food systems.

Environmental Sustainability

Sustainability plays a key role in the overall design. The project incorporates livestock to provide energy for the greenhouse, creating a system that helps reduce environmental impact. The design also proposes the use of naturally heated hot springs and a ground source heat pump system for heating. This approach demonstrates a commitment to eco-friendly practices while making efficient use of available resources.

Elevational Strategy

The varying elevations within the restaurant enhance the views of the nearby mineral waters and the Hverfjall volcano. These height differences provide diners with unobstructed sights, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. This design choice enriches the dining experience by inviting guests to feel more connected to nature. Moreover, the layout includes functional spaces, like a multipurpose hall and areas for food preparation, ensuring a practical and comfortable environment for both diners and staff.
