The Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop is located in a volcanic region of Iceland and serves as a space for visitors to gather. Its design is built around the natural features of the landscape, focusing on sustainable practices that make use of geothermal energy and volcanic rock. The architectural idea draws on the concept of a "straw," promoting a connection between the natural environment and the interior spaces.

Design Intent

In its layout, the building offers both public and private areas catering to various functions. Public spaces include a visitor center, an exhibition hall, a coffee shop, and an outdoor courtyard. In contrast, private areas contain offices and storage rooms. This clear organization helps guide visitors through the space, encouraging interaction with each other and the environment.

Thermal Strategies

The building's design incorporates thermal dynamics to enhance energy efficiency. Basalt is used as a primary material to aid in energy transfer. The structure features downward and upward extensions that shape functional spaces while utilizing the geothermal properties of the site. These design choices help maintain interior temperature comfort and provide an appealing visual profile that blends with the surrounding landscape.

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation is a significant aspect of the design, ensuring adequate airflow within the interior. The upward extensions are designed to capture breezes, which regulate subterranean heat. This creates a pleasant atmosphere for visitors. Large windows and carefully placed openings make full use of daylight and allow natural light to permeate, enriching the experience inside.

Ecological Integration

Another feature of the coffee shop is the use of porous volcanic stone, which helps manage indoor humidity. This material reflects a commitment to climate-responsive design. The building encourages outdoor living areas that engage with the Icelandic ecosystem. These spaces invite visitors to enjoy interactions with their surroundings while also fostering a sense of community.

The design captures a balance between practical use and environmental consciousness. It stands as a thoughtful response to the beauty of its volcanic setting, providing a space that invites both relaxation and appreciation of nature.
