Bamboo Skin Huts with Ptfe Membrane for Sustainable Coastal Living

Project in-detail

Bamboo skin huts, enhanced by microporous PTFE membranes, provide functional and sustainable living spaces for the Bajau community, seamlessly integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern amenities along the coastal waters of Malaysia.
5 key facts about this project
01
Bamboo skin provides natural insulation and flexibility.
02
PTFE membranes ensure waterproofing and durability in coastal conditions.
03
Electricity is generated from ocean current turbines for sustainable power.
04
Rainwater collection systems support freshwater availability for residents.
05
Traditional craftsmanship is preserved through the use of local building materials.

The Bajau Sea Hut project is located in Kampong Sen, Buligisan, Pulau Bum Bu, and focuses on improving the living conditions of the Bajau people, who are known for their sea-based lifestyle. The design aims to enhance their traditional floating homes, making them more functional and sustainable while respecting the unique cultural identity of the community. The approach combines essential modern amenities with the traditions and practices that define the Bajau way of life.

Architecture Concept

The layout is carefully designed to accommodate everyday activities and promote a sense of community. Key areas include a wash and toilet space, sleeping quarters, a dining area, and storage solutions. This arrangement supports individual needs while encouraging social interaction. Such a design fosters connections among residents, which is vital for maintaining their cultural bonds.

Materiality

Choosing the right materials plays an important role in this project. The use of external bamboo skin, microporous waterproof PTFE membrane, rainwater collection gutters, and merbau wood frames shows a commitment to sustainability and local building traditions. These materials provide durability and align with the community's way of life. They enhance the living environment while also echoing the traditional craftsmanship that is essential to the Bajau culture.

Sustainable Features

Modern amenities have been integrated into the design, including sanitary facilities and electricity generated from water turbines. Fresh water is sourced from rainwater harvesting and desalination of seawater. These sustainable features aim to improve the quality of life for residents without disrupting their cultural practices. By combining traditional living with contemporary needs, the project seeks to create a balanced and supportive environment.

Design Detail

One notable design detail is the bamboo blinds used in each hut. These blinds offer privacy and shade while also highlighting the artistry of the Bajau people. This element strengthens the connection to their heritage and provides practical benefits, making the space both functional and culturally significant.
