Located in the vibrant landscapes of Cambodia, the Remote Hideout Huts project offers a blend of sustainability and cultural significance within a compact design framework. It aims to create an immersive guest experience while maintaining a focus on ecological responsibility. The design includes a well-organized arrangement of spaces, featuring a main bedroom, bathroom, meditation area, and deck. The overall form is inspired by ancient Khmer temples, which establishes a strong connection with the region's architectural history.

Spatial Organization

The huts are arranged thoughtfully to enhance the user experience. Each unit includes essential facilities while promoting a sense of openness. The entryway is designed with flexibility, allowing adaptability depending on site conditions. An optional pool configuration provides additional recreational space for guests. The symmetric layout not only reflects cultural reverence but also fosters a calm, welcoming environment.

Sustainability Practices

Sustainability underlines the design and construction of the huts. Locally sourced bamboo is the primary material, known for its rapid growth and low environmental impact. Roughly 350 bamboo poles are used in each hut, supporting local economies and ecological practices. Pre-cut and pre-assembled components help to streamline construction, reducing the time spent on-site and enhancing resource efficiency. The huts are spaced strategically to limit disruption to the landscape, ensuring privacy and preserving the natural surroundings.

Architectural Inspiration

The design draws from traditional Cambodian elements, especially the use of bamboo rafts, which symbolize a historical relationship with water. Bent bamboo louvers reflect local craftsmanship and provide both ventilation and natural light. A green roof blends vegetation with the structure, echoing the longstanding relationship between nature and building practices seen throughout Khmer history.

Visual Connection to Nature

The architectural approach establishes a strong bond between indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting a peaceful atmosphere for guests. The thoughtful inclusion of water features, such as the optional pool, highlights the cultural significance of water in Cambodian life. Treated bamboo beams and rafters contribute not only to the structural reliability of the huts but also serve as a visual reminder of traditional construction methods that coexist with the landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
