5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed primarily from bamboo, reflecting traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
02
Utilizes a recycled Tyvek membrane for enhanced sustainability and environmental impact.
03
Features an elevated platform allowing pedestrian passage and public engagement.
04
Integrates triple-glazed glass for improved energy efficiency and noise reduction.
05
Designed as a lantern, it serves both functional and symbolic roles in urban meditation.

The design is located in Tokyo and combines elements from traditional Japanese culture with a modern approach to urban living. It serves as a lantern for meditation, providing a quiet space for reflection in the midst of a busy city environment. The project highlights the importance of light and spatial arrangement, creating an inviting atmosphere for passersby and encouraging moments of peace.

Light and Spatial Experience

The design skillfully uses light to enhance the character of the space. Lanterns line the narrow alleys, casting a warm glow that stands out against the surrounding tall buildings. This thoughtful use of light not only draws attention to the lantern but also creates a calming atmosphere. Inside, visitors can escape the noise of city life, making it a perfect spot to pause and reflect.

Material Choices and Sustainability

Materials are essential to the overall message of the design. Tyvek, commonly used in protective clothing, is featured prominently. Its use raises important questions about sustainability and the recyclability of materials often thrown away. Additionally, a recycled Tyvek membrane is employed for the outer envelope, showing a commitment to environmentally friendly practices in construction.

Structural Framework

The use of Japanese bamboo forms a central part of the structure. Shaped like a traditional lantern, the bamboo skeleton provides a strong yet flexible framework. This choice respects local building traditions while allowing for a design that meets modern needs. The structure's design also enables it to adapt easily to various settings.

User Interaction and Elevation

By elevating the platform, the design creates space underneath for pedestrian movement. This invites people to engage with the environment in a more meaningful way. As individuals ascend the structure, they are met with unique views of the surrounding city, enhancing their experience and encouraging them to explore further.

A triple-glazed box is included, improving thermal performance and reducing noise from the street outside. It permits clear visibility while maintaining a sense of calm within. The transparency of the glass aligns with the intention of creating a refuge, allowing natural light to fill the space while still offering a peaceful retreat.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
