Neb III is situated in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi, designed for observing the landscape and various bird species that inhabit it. The structure takes inspiration from the natural form of a neb, translating it into a triangular shape that connects with the surrounding desert environment. This observatory engages visitors through a journey divided into three distinct levels, emphasizing interaction with the local ecosystem.

Design Layout and Levels

The layout incorporates an atrium surrounded by a circulation ramp, facilitating a gradual ascent through the building. This atrium creates a space where the landscape plays a vital role in the experience, while the ramp ensures smooth movement between levels. The first level functions as a semi-open patio dedicated to educational activities, helping visitors learn about local bird species. The atmosphere here, shaped by soft shadows and changing textures of sand, fosters a deeper connection with nature.

Visitor Experience and Interaction

As visitors make their way up the wooden ramp, the design reveals expansive views of the wetlands, adding to the experience. The facade consists of bamboo sticks that create a playful visual effect, framing the landscape as individuals ascend. This gradual unveiling highlights the beauty of the reserve, deepening the relationship between the structure and its environment. At the upper level, three uniquely shaped platforms extend outward, offering a space for watching both the landscape and the birds in flight.

Innovative Design Features

A key feature of Neb III is the protective net structure that allows visitors to lie suspended above the patio. This unique aspect offers a different perspective, making it possible to watch flamingos soaring in the sky. This feature enhances the educational intent of the design, inviting guests to engage with the environment in a fresh way. It reflects the larger goal of raising awareness and appreciation for the natural world.

Material Considerations

The boardwalk is made of wooden planks supported by guides underneath, ensuring stability while maintaining an organic look. The wooden ramp uses glu-laminated wood, chosen for its durability and moisture resistance, aligning with the project's focus on being ecologically sensitive. Using natural bamboo in the facade further emphasizes the commitment to sustainability, demonstrating a modern approach to architecture that prioritizes the environment.

The design culminates in the experience of lying on the protective net, where visitors can gaze up, surrounded by the tranquil landscape of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
