Bamboo-Covered Observation Tower Overlooking Al Wathba Wetland

Project in-detail

The observation tower, rising 12 meters and enveloped in bamboo, offers visitors a protected vantage point over the Al Wathba Wetland while prioritizing minimal ecological impact and user comfort.
5 key facts about this project
01
Observation tower features a double helix staircase for improved visitor experience.
02
Pathway constructed from unbaked clay slabs for sustainability and easy maintenance.
03
Bamboo cover provides protection while enhancing aesthetic integration with the environment.
04
Design accommodates a maximum of 10 visitors to reduce noise pollution.
05
Strategically placed shaded rest points address the challenges of the desert climate.

The design is rooted in the idea of lightness and aims to work naturally with the surrounding environment of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. It features an observation tower that functions as both a gathering space and a landmark, offering visitors a chance to connect with the unique landscape. Inspired by Bedouin tents, lanterns, and the flora of the desert, the design seeks to create an engaging and respectful experience for visitors.

Observation Tower

At the heart of the concept is the observation tower, which includes a double helix staircase. This feature allows movement through the space while providing different views of the landscape. Rising to 12 meters, the tower can accommodate around 10 visitors at once. This limited capacity is intentional, as it helps reduce noise, allowing visitors to experience the quietness of the wetlands. The design considers the local wildlife, ensuring that human activity does not disturb their habitat.

Materials and Construction

The pathway is made of unbaked clay slabs, chosen for their environmental benefits. Each slab is sized at 2x0.6 meters, which facilitates easy installation and replacement over time. This choice reinforces the overall theme of lightness while guiding visitors through the site, enhancing their journey alongside nature.

Surrounding Facilities

Protected observation points are established throughout the area using modular wood systems covered with bamboo. These structures enhance the visitor experience by providing rest areas with benches and viewpoints. Their design allows for comfortable engagement with the landscape while using materials that blend naturally with the environment, ensuring a connected visual aesthetic.

Climate Considerations

The design takes into account the harsh desert climate. Shaded rest points are strategically placed along the pathway to offer comfort and protection from the sun. This planning helps visitors relax and enjoy the surroundings without feeling exposed. The arrangement of these features highlights an emphasis on creating a welcoming atmosphere where people can appreciate both the wetland and its ecological significance.

The observation tower features a substantial cover that spans 400 square meters. This cover not only provides shelter but also enhances the overall experience for those exploring the area's rich ecological landscape.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
