Bamboo and Laminated Timber Units Designed for Flexible Living Solutions

Project in-detail

Constructed using bamboo and laminated timber, the design offers modular living units that can expand to meet diverse needs while promoting sustainable practices and community interaction.
5 key facts about this project
01
Modular units can expand from 6m² to 25m² for varying needs.
02
Design incorporates passive ventilation for energy efficiency.
03
Bamboo and laminated timber chosen for sustainability and strength.
04
Mirror configurations enhance communal living and outdoor interaction.
05
Rainwater harvesting systems support resource independence.

The project represents a modern approach to housing in Malaysia, addressing the challenges of accessibility and sustainability. It focuses on creating modular living spaces that adapt to different needs in a context where rising property prices and economic conditions can hinder home ownership. The overall design concept emphasizes flexibility and expandability, allowing for seamless transitions between compact and larger configurations.

Modular Design and Configuration

The system features a base size of 6m², extending up to 25m². This adaptability meets various living requirements. The layout includes single units, two mirror units arranged in a bench style, and double units configured in a 'Z' shape. These designs encourage communal living while providing personal privacy. Additionally, mirror units connect with outdoor courtyards, which enhances the experience and promotes social interaction among residents.

Functional Living Spaces

Units are designed to accommodate different functional modes. Each space can support working, yoga, and meditation, aligning with contemporary lifestyle preferences. The ability to switch between these modes is enhanced by features that ensure each unit is self-sufficient. Passive ventilation and natural lighting improve energy efficiency and comfort, making the living experience more enjoyable.

Material Selection and Sustainability

The choice of materials is important to the overall design. Laminated timber, bamboo, and Styrofoam are selected for their environmental benefits and structural properties. Laminated timber offers strength and is lightweight, suitable for modular construction. Bamboo grows quickly and is renewable, making it a sustainable choice. Styrofoam helps with thermal insulation, enhancing energy efficiency within living spaces.

Integration of Green Technologies

Green technologies play a vital role in the design. Solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems reduce utility costs and promote responsible resource use. This integration shows a commitment to sustainability while also addressing broader environmental concerns. The project aims to support energy independence and create an eco-friendly living environment.

Details in the design reflect careful consideration for both indoor and outdoor spaces. The thoughtful arrangement encourages a balanced lifestyle, allowing for comfortable living while fostering a sense of community among residents.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
