Būris Putniem Tornis is situated in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia. It combines the needs of horse shelters with spaces for observation. The design aims to connect users with the natural landscape while providing functional areas for various activities. The overall concept focuses on adaptability, creating a structure that works harmoniously with its environment.

Structural Design

The tower is divided into three sections, each fulfilling a specific role. The ground level features modular horse shelters that can be arranged in different configurations. This flexibility allows the space to adapt to various needs. Above this, a living room is designed to provide a comfortable gathering place, complete with a fireplace. Sliding doors along the perimeter enable easy transitions to the outside, fostering interaction with the surrounding area.

Observation Levels

At the top, the "birdcage" consists of five levels dedicated to viewing the landscape. Each level includes balconies and strategically placed window openings that enhance visibility. These features invite occupants to engage with the beauty of nature while experiencing the space from different heights and angles. The arrangement encourages exploration and observation from a variety of perspectives.

Material and Structure

Reinforced concrete pillars form the foundation, ensuring the tower’s stability. The design incorporates both metal frames and wooden elements, balancing strength with visual appeal. This choice of materials creates a robust structure that is well-suited to its natural setting. The thoughtful combination of these components supports the tower’s purpose while maintaining a connection to the landscape.

Accessibility

Accessibility is an important consideration in the design. An elevator is installed to allow smooth movement between levels, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the space. This feature enhances inclusivity and encourages all visitors to engage with the tower’s offerings. Moreover, the careful arrangement of gathering areas and viewing points creates a welcoming environment for reflection and interaction with the surroundings.

With its careful design decisions, Būris Putniem Tornis fosters an atmosphere that encourages users to appreciate the landscape, providing numerous opportunities for contemplation and enjoyment of the natural world.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
