The design addressing London's housing crisis aims to provide a thoughtful response to the pressing need for equitable living spaces. Set against the backdrop of a city known for its social contrasts, the proposal revolves around the idea of "The Line of Unison." This linear solution seeks to connect different social classes, particularly in light of the consequences stemming from the Grenfell Tower fire in 2016. The goal is to reshape the concept of affordable housing while promoting community engagement and interaction among residents.

Conceptual Framework

The approach takes a deep look at the inequities present in the housing market, treating affordable housing as not just a necessity but also a means to create more diverse and adaptable living spaces. The design features a mix of congested and open areas that allow for various functions. This strategy creates an active environment where people can coexist and adapt over time. Such a layout encourages connections between residents, helping to break down social barriers.

Integration of Public and Private Realms

By incorporating both public and private spaces into its design, the project seeks to eliminate the divisions that often separate different groups within the community. This combination invites interaction among diverse populations, fostering an inclusive social environment. Shared spaces, parks, and community facilities serve as connectors within the urban landscape. These elements push against the trend of isolating individuals based on economic status and encourage a sense of belonging.

Artistic Elements and Materiality

The project also integrates artistic contributions from contemporary figures like Francis Bacon and Michael Kvium. These painted elements provide a cultural richness to the overall narrative. While details about building materials are not emphasized, the art enhances the living environment and transforms each space into a conversation starter. This artistic dimension not only adds visual interest but also reflects the diverse identities present in London.

The design comes together in a thoughtful arrangement of spaces that welcome residents to engage fully with their surroundings. Each area, whether a shared space or a private unit, is crafted to strengthen community ties. By thoughtfully integrating various elements, the project aims to create a cohesive urban experience that encompasses the varied lives of its inhabitants.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
