The design titled "A Convergence of Cave and Sky" focuses on blending the built environment with nature. Located within a ravine, the visitors' center takes an unconventional approach by placing key spaces underground. This choice minimizes the impact on the surrounding landscape and offers visitors direct views of the scenery above them.

Integration with Landscape

The design situates functional areas below ground, allowing the building to connect with the natural terrain. By doing this, the project preserves the views and aesthetics of the landscape while encouraging exploration. The underground spaces offer a unique experience, allowing visitors to feel immersed in their surroundings. Apertures are strategically placed to create connections between the interior and the sky, enhancing the relationship between the architecture and nature.

Light and Spatial Experience

The addition of apertures draws inspiration from the openings found in cave ceilings. These features not only let in natural light but also connect the underground spaces to the outdoor environment. As visitors move through the building, the quality of light changes throughout the day. This variation in lighting contributes to the overall atmosphere, making the experience dynamic and engaging.

Functional Design Elements

The design includes walls that fold and create functional elements within the interior, such as seating and storage areas. These built-in features serve a purpose while maintaining an overall cohesive look. They enhance user comfort and interaction with the space, ensuring that every element has both form and function.

Site Planning and Flow

The layout includes essential spaces such as an entrance, storage rooms, an office, a café, recessed seating, and water closets. Each area is carefully arranged to promote ease of movement and accessibility. This thoughtful planning enables visitors to navigate the building effortlessly and encourages engagement with both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.

A notable design feature is the folding walls that blend utility and aesthetics. They create functional spaces while shaping the environment, enriching the experience of being in the ravine.
