5 key facts about this project
The Pape Natural Park Observation Tower is located within the landscape of Pape Natural Park, providing visitors with elevated points for viewing and experiencing the surrounding environment. The design draws on the nesting behavior of birds, using weaving and enclosure as guiding principles to shape a structure that establishes a close relationship between architecture and nature.
Spatial Strategy
The tower follows a spiral circulation, encouraging gradual ascent and exploration through multiple viewing levels. Each platform offers a distinct perspective: the lower levels provide partially sheltered vantage points, while the uppermost platform opens fully to the park, resembling the form of a bird’s nest. The projecting decks extend outward from the core structure, framing wide panoramas and emphasizing direct engagement with the landscape.
Materiality and Construction
Steel and concrete form the primary structural system, ensuring stability and support for the cantilevering platforms. Timber decking introduces a tactile and warmer surface underfoot, contrasting with the robustness of the supporting frame. Ropes are integrated as vertical and diagonal elements, evoking the woven logic of nests while serving as both enclosure and guide for movement. This interplay of solid and flexible materials reinforces the conceptual link to natural processes, while shaping an adaptable and layered spatial experience for visitors.
