The visitor center located in the lava fields of Dimmuborgir, Iceland, serves as an important space for both education and leisure. Set against a backdrop of unique geological features, the proposal reflects the area’s volcanic history. The structure invites visitors to explore and understand the natural beauty that has been shaped over thousands of years. The concept emphasizes a connection between the building and the landscape, making the natural surroundings an integral part of the visitor experience.

Design Concept

At the core of the design is the relationship between volcanic activity and water, which led to the creation of the dramatic lava formations. The visitor center rises from the ground, appearing as if it has grown from the earth itself. This design choice reduces visual impact and helps the center blend with its environment. The facade mirrors the shapes and textures found in the lava fields, sending a clear message of harmony with the natural world.

Functional Organization

Inside, the visitor center is arranged to support various activities. Key areas include exhibition spaces, a reception area, a café, and a playground for children. These spaces are connected by clear pathways that allow for easy movement throughout the building. A ramp leads visitors to an observation deck, offering sweeping views of the nearby Hverfjall volcano. This strategic layout encourages exploration and enhances the visitor experience, allowing people to engage with their surroundings comfortably.

Integration with Landscape

The design incorporates exhibition halls and maintenance facilities that rise above the main visitor center, resembling the natural formations found in Dimmuborgir. This upward orientation draws attention to the landscape and reinforces the connection between the built structure and the natural environment. The design arrangement promotes both education and recreation, making it easier for visitors to learn about the area's geological history while enjoying their time at the center.

Aesthetic Consideration

The materials used in the visitor center are not specifically mentioned in the presentation, yet the overall design suggests choices that complement the volcanic landscape. The textures and finishes are likely selected to reflect the earthy qualities of the site. The design culminates in a terrace area, inviting visitors to take in the mesmerizing views while creating an experience that emphasizes the power and tranquility of nature around them.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
