The Flamingo Observation Tower is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi. It serves both as a viewing point and a center for visitors to learn about the local wildlife, particularly the flamingos. The design focuses on connecting the built environment with the natural landscape, creating spaces where visitors can feel part of the ecosystem around them.

Design and Concept

The structure consists of four levels, featuring a ribbed lattice design that allows for smooth movement. Visitors can navigate the tower using ramps and a spiral stair, enhancing the experience as they explore the different levels. The design draws inspiration from the rich cultural elements of Abu Dhabi, incorporating ideas from traditional veils and local patterns found in textiles and fishing techniques.

Materiality and Construction

Timber is the main material used in the tower’s construction, prominently featured in the ribbed elements that shape its form. This choice emphasizes a bond with the natural surroundings and supports a modular construction approach. By prefabricating parts of the tower, builders can efficiently assemble the structure on site, ensuring quality and durability while streamlining the building process.

Visitor Experience

The design includes three separate observation platforms to cater to various visitor needs. Lower platforms are accessible for large groups and those with mobility challenges. The upper platform, accessed via the spiral stair, provides clear views of the wetland, making it suitable for photography. Each platform has been carefully positioned to offer unique perspectives for observing the flamingo population and the rich biodiversity of the area.

Interaction with Landscape

The layout of the ramped pathways and observation decks enhances the relationship between the tower and its surroundings. As visitors ascend, they remain connected to the landscape, allowing for active engagement with the environment. The light white metal mesh cladding not only protects from sunlight but also helps reflect light, giving the structure an airy quality as it interacts with the wetland’s atmosphere.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
