Nestled within a "V"-shaped valley landscape for optimal views.

The Meditation Cabins at Vale de Moses are proposed in a "V"-shaped valley in Portugal, designed to promote mindfulness and reflection. The idea serves as a space for meditation, allowing visitors to connect with the natural environment. Each cabin is crafted as a "poleiro," which translates to a suspended resting place. This concept emphasizes a combination of shelter and observation, inviting occupants to engage with the landscape and foster a sense of tranquility.

Modular Design

The layout consists of four cabin units, each with its own outdoor garden space. These are arranged in a fan-like pattern along a proposed terrace, which provides stunning views of the valley. The modular design allows for easy replication and repositioning of each cabin, adapting to various site conditions and preferences of users. This flexibility enhances the overall experience of the retreat.

Massing and Form

The design strategy divides the structure into a habitable portion and a supporting base that lifts the cabins above uneven terrain. This separation creates a feeling of lightness and offers unobstructed views of the surroundings. The butterfly roof shape serves both an aesthetic purpose and a functional one, collecting rainwater and harnessing solar energy, thereby promoting sustainable practices throughout the design.

Outdoor Integration

Rock gardens sit between the cabins, providing peaceful areas for meditation and deeper engagement with nature. These gardens effectively manage runoff and contribute to the site's ecological performance. The landscaping features native shrubs and bushes, chosen to complement the local environment and improve the retreat's sustainability through the use of grey water.

Structural Considerations

Each cabin is supported by metal-clad timber frames. This choice of structure keeps the construction lightweight and minimizes the environmental footprint. The approach ensures durability while maintaining the visual harmony between built elements and the landscape. Attention to structure and materials supports the coherence of the design and enhances the overall experience of the retreat.
