The Ķemeri National Park Visitor Center is located within Latvia's natural landscape. It serves as a point of entry for visitors, combining functional spaces with the environment through its design. The concept focuses on interlocking square volumes that are rotated at 45-degree angles, allowing for ample natural light and encouraging interactions with the surroundings.

Design Concept

The overall layout is defined by these interlocking volumes, which create a flow between different areas of the center. This arrangement promotes easy movement while maintaining a visual connection to the outside. The building is elevated slightly above ground level, transforming it into a space where various activities can take place, thereby inviting guests to engage with the beauty of the park.

Spatial Organization

The project makes good use of existing infrastructure, incorporating parking for 100 vehicles and four buses. This setup ensures access without disrupting the park's ecological balance. Areas designated for camping and outdoor dining are thoughtfully arranged to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the landscape. Terraces linked to the café provide outdoor seating options, allowing visitors to enjoy refreshments amid a natural backdrop.

Material Usage

The primary cladding material is black-stained Latvian Pine, which harmonizes with the natural environment and offers durability. Aged bronze accents for windows and gutters add an elegant touch that connects the center to local architectural traditions. These materials not only enhance the center's visual appeal but also contribute to overall sustainability.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability is an important aspect of the design. Water management is thoughtfully integrated, with systems for rainwater harvesting included. Water is collected through gutter chains and directed to an underground tank for later use. A septic tank helps manage waste responsibly, ensuring the center operates effectively while minimizing its environmental impact.

Natural light is essential in shaping the atmosphere inside the building. Large skylights provide illumination during the day, creating a warm and inviting space. This thoughtful use of light enhances the experience, allowing visitors to feel connected to the surrounding park while inside the center. The play of light and shadow within the volumes enriches the various functional areas, adding depth to the overall design.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
