Absorbed in Nature is located in Waitakaruru, New Zealand, and serves as a place for contemplation and personal reflection. The design combines rectangular forms with circular natural elements, establishing a connection between the inside and the outside. By carefully considering the relationship with the surrounding landscape, the retreat aims to provide tranquility for those seeking solitude.

Spatial Dynamics

Variable windows play a key role in the design, allowing light and nature to enter the spaces. These openings adapt to changes in weather and time, creating a dynamic atmosphere. Visitors can feel the environment shift throughout the day, enhancing their connection with nature. This thoughtful arrangement encourages exploration and interaction with the landscape beyond the walls.

Meditation Spaces

Dedicated meditation areas are designed to minimize distractions and promote focus. Circular ceiling windows made from translucent polycarbonate allow diffused light to fill the spaces, creating a calm setting for introspection. This round design element symbolizes unity, reflecting the project’s aim to foster both inner reflection and appreciation for the natural surroundings.

Entrance Experience

A stone wall serves as the entrance and creates a sense of boundary between the outside world and the interior sanctuary. This wall offers a tactile experience, marking the transition into a space intended for quietness and peace. The threshold sets the mood for what lies ahead, signaling that a different kind of experience begins inside.

Material Consideration

The materials used include waterproof baksia wood and translucent polycarbonate, chosen for their durability and local relevance. The waterproof baksia wood reflects the natural environment and supports the structure, while the translucent polycarbonate provides natural light without compromising privacy. This combination enhances the meditation experience and strengthens the bond between the design and its setting.

Water features are incorporated into the landscape, adding another layer to the sensory experience. The sound of flowing water blends with the natural elements, deepening the connection between visitors and their surroundings, while promoting a sense of tranquility throughout the space.
