The Dark Castle is a visitor center located in the black lava fields of Dimmuborgir, designed to connect with the geological characteristics shaped by the eruption of the Hverfjall volcano over two thousand three hundred years ago. The center aims to provide educational experiences while allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural environment. The design considers the landscape's features, creating a harmonious relationship between the building and its surroundings.

Design Concept

The concept centers around a curvilinear form that mirrors the area's volcanic activity. The building's circular layout encourages movement through different functional areas, such as the reception, exhibition spaces, café, and playground. This arrangement makes it easy for visitors to navigate and engage with the exhibits that showcase the geological significance of the region.

Architectural Features

Central to the design is a courtyard, which serves as a gathering space for visitors. It features an installation that mimics the appearance of lava eruptions, linking the experience to the site's volcanic history. The large roof, which measures 45 meters in diameter, acts as both a protective cover and an observation deck. From here, visitors can see the expansive lava fields and nearby lake, enhancing their connection to the environment.

Structural and Material Components

The roof is constructed with cross-laminated timber, providing a sturdy and sustainable structure. This material choice reflects a focus on durability while minimizing environmental impact. The outer layer of burnt wood helps to blend the building with the surrounding landscape and offers resilience against weather conditions. Large windows allow ample natural light inside, framing views of the remarkable scenery outside.

Visitor Circulation

The pathway leading from a drop-off roundabout to the entrance is designed to guide visitors thoughtfully. This winding route helps them engage with the area as they approach the building. Inside, spaces flow together, featuring customized furniture that fits the curves of the architecture. This design creates an inviting atmosphere and encourages exploration of the center's offerings.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
