5 key facts about this project
01
Grass-covered roof enhances insulation while blending with the natural landscape.
02
Oblique windows offer both privacy and panoramic views of the surroundings.
03
Rooms designed as "pool access rooms" allow immediate entry to thermal springs.
04
Curved roof shape mimics traditional long house forms while serving modern needs.
05
Flowing water from the hot springs is integrated into the exterior design.

Long House focuses on reinterpreting the traditional Icelandic long house, positioned within the distinct landscape of Iceland. This spa guest house reflects the essence of Icelandic vernacular architecture while serving modern needs. The overall concept highlights the importance of community living and interaction with the natural environment, honoring Iceland's rich cultural background through contemporary design.

Historical Influences

The project draws inspiration from Iceland's turf houses, known for their grass-covered roofs that provide insulation against the challenging climate. By referencing these historical forms, the design captures the spirit of the Norwegian long house, emphasizing efficient use of space and communal living. This approach bridges the gap between traditional practices and the requirements of modern residential life.

Spatial Organization

The structure features a long, narrow shape that resembles a ship, integrating with the surrounding landscape. Visitors enter through a vertical entrance that leads to a lobby and front desk area, creating an inviting atmosphere. This layout fosters interaction and encourages visitors to engage with their surroundings from the moment they arrive.

Integration with Nature

Strategically placed windows throughout the building offer unbroken views of the beautiful Icelandic landscape. Each room, designed as a "pool access room," allows for direct connection to the thermal springs through angled windows and balconies. This design choice allows guests to experience the calming benefits of the hot springs while enjoying the scenery outside.

Architectural Features

The exterior of the building uses traditional grass characteristics, incorporating a ship-like design that flows with water from the hot springs along its sides. This innovative integration reshapes thermal architecture while maintaining a connection to the site's geographic features. The roof is curved and spiraled, covered with grass to enhance insulation and energy efficiency while blending into the natural surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
