The design for the Kemeri Bogs is set in a diverse landscape filled with meadows, wetlands, and various natural habitats. It consists of a series of pavilions connected by a boardwalk, which allows visitors to explore the rich ecology of the area. This project emphasizes ecological education, encouraging a deeper connection between people and nature as they interact with different biomes along the pathway.

Design Intent

The main goal is to enhance the current paths in the park while expanding access to the forest. The boardwalk acts as a central route, uniting various functional spaces and guiding visitors through a cohesive experience. This design promotes discovery and learning, allowing guests to engage with the unique characteristics of the landscape.

Architectural Composition

The site is divided into four biomes, with each having its own pavilion for viewing and contemplation. These structures serve various purposes, such as information centers and cafés. They are simple and rustic, built from solid frames that mimic the shapes found in nature. This architectural style aligns with the surroundings, ensuring the buildings blend well into the landscape.

Materiality and Sustainability

Wood is the primary material used in constructing the pavilions, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and local resources. Wood louvers create shaded areas and help control sunlight, making the space comfortable for visitors. This choice in materials not only supports environmental responsibility but also ties the buildings to the local context.

Experiential Engagement

As guests walk along the boardwalk, they are invited to appreciate the park's ecosystems through carefully selected plantings that mimic the native flora. This design creates small-scale versions of the different habitats, reinforcing educational goals and fostering an understanding of biodiversity. Large windows in the A-frame pavilions provide views of the surrounding trees, allowing natural light to flow inside while connecting the interior space with the outside environment.

The terraces beside the core spaces offer elevated viewpoints across the landscape, enriching the overall experience for visitors and encouraging them to take in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
