The Beacon, proposed at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia, USA, occupies a historically important site that previously housed the PECO Utility Building. This design serves as a community hub that integrates various uses within an urban landscape that is rapidly changing. The project emphasizes connections to different urban elements, including agriculture, education, transportation, and technology, creating a focal point for public engagement and interaction.

Design Concept

The concept behind the Beacon revolves around fostering community engagement through mixed-use programming. Situated west of Center City, the building establishes connections to key local landmarks such as FMC Tower, University City, 30th Street Station, and Comcast Center. This arrangement enhances the connectivity of the urban area and encourages public participation in everyday activities.

Vertical Farming and Sustainability

A significant feature of the Beacon is the inclusion of vertical farming systems within its core. This aspect aligns with current trends in sustainability and promotes education around agriculture and food production. The vertical farms allow for community involvement and help improve the ecological responsibility of the structure, underscoring health and wellness as essential parts of the building's purpose.

Mixed-Use Functionality

The building features distinct areas designed for different uses: office, residential, and community. Office spaces occupy floors four, five, seven, and nine, allowing for collaboration among users. Residential units on floors three, six, and eight provide a variety of living options for diverse occupants and ensure access to shared green spaces. The first two floors focus on community programming, which includes classrooms and event spaces, supporting a flexible use of space while encouraging public involvement.

The Waterfront Connection

The design includes a beer garden along the Schuylkill River, bringing new life to a previously unused area and encouraging people to engage with the waterfront. This feature draws visitors and creates a lively social space for gatherings. Enhanced by the play of light on the building's exterior and the inclusion of street art, the Beacon contributes to the visual landscape of Philadelphia, connecting its modern function with the city's cultural heritage.
