The memorial dedicated to civilians lost during the Sri Lankan Civil War is conceptually designed to blend into its surroundings and create a space for reflection. Proposed within a field, the memorial provides an environment where visitors can connect with their memories in a peaceful setting. The design emphasizes both introspection and unity, crafting a protective yet inviting atmosphere.

Preservation of Existing Trees

Central to the design is the preservation of existing trees on the site. These trees serve as key features within a reflection garden. They do not merely exist in the background; rather, they actively contribute to the memorial's theme of change and transformation. This approach creates a tranquil atmosphere that pays homage to lost lives while illustrating the passage of time through the seasons.

Connection to Surrounding Environment

The memorial is strategically proposed to connect with nearby gardens, such as the evergreen allee and clock tower gardens. This placement enhances the overall visitor experience by creating a sense of continuity throughout the area. The circular layout encourages people to move through the space, allowing moments of silence and contemplation along their journey.

Technical Considerations and Materiality

Technical aspects of the design include a layered roof structure that is supported by a wooden framework. A concrete retaining wall adds durability and structural strength. The roof's top layer is designed to allow natural light to filter through, creating an inviting interior. While wood enhances the connection to nature, concrete ensures that the structure will stand the test of time.

Culminating Design Detail

A notable design feature is the undulating roof, which mimics the landscape while providing a sense of shelter. The smooth walls inside contrast with the rough wood exterior, leading visitors inward. This thoughtful design emphasizes opportunities for reflection, inviting individuals to engage with both the memorial and the natural world around them.
