The Dubai Print House is a contemporary architectural project located in Dubai, specifically designed to exemplify the integration of advanced construction technologies with practical living spaces. This project emphasizes modular design principles, utilizing a 15m by 30m "Magic Module" to establish a consistent framework throughout the structure. By incorporating 3D printing techniques in material selection and construction, the project aims to reduce waste and enhance efficiency, reflecting a commitment to sustainability in urban environments.

Innovative Design Approaches

One of the distinctive features of the Dubai Print House is its split-level design, which allows for a varied spatial experience within the home. This layout not only maximizes functionality but also facilitates an intuitive flow between different areas. The project's ground and first floors are clearly defined, with open-plan living areas promoting family cohesion while ensuring private areas like bedrooms remain secluded.

The use of 3D printed concrete as the primary construction material is a significant aspect of this design. This method reduces the environmental impact of traditional building processes, as it limits material waste and allows for on-site production. Additionally, the inclusion of lightweight aluminum for structural components enhances the building's overall sustainability while providing durability.

Sustainability is further reinforced through the integration of solar panels on the roof, promoting the use of renewable energy sources. The house incorporates low-emissivity glass to minimize heat gain, demonstrating a practical approach to energy efficiency in the context of the harsh UAE climate. Radiant floor heating systems contribute to optimal indoor comfort without excessive energy use.

Functional Zoning and Special Features

The architectural layout of the Dubai Print House is organized into distinct zones that cater to various needs. The residential area encompasses private living spaces, including bedrooms, while communal spaces such as the living room and dining area foster interaction among inhabitants. The cleverly designed annex houses utility spaces, keeping essential systems seamlessly integrated yet unobtrusive.

What sets this project apart from conventional housing designs is its adaptability. The modular approach allows for flexibility in use, accommodating changing family dynamics over time. Spaces can be reconfigured or expanded, addressing both current and future needs. Achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics, the architecture embodies a forward-thinking philosophy that responds intelligently to the demands of urban living.

For a comprehensive understanding of the Dubai Print House, including architectural plans, sections, and design features, interested readers are encouraged to delve deeper into the project's presentation. Exploring the architectural ideas and innovative elements will provide valuable insights into the design's operational efficiency and sustainable rationale.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
