Krakow Oxygen Home 1st prize winners Nima Nian and Behdad Heydari

Nima Nian: Nian is my nickname. Even though “HAJILI” is my family name, but I have lived with “NIMA NIAN” for so long now that I have gotten used to it; I am “Nima Nian”, from Tehran, and have lived for 27 years. I have worked for “Shirdel and associates architects (Bahram Shirdel)” and have now founded “Tehran Studio” in 2015 with my fellow friend Behdad Heydari in Tehran.

Behdad Heydari: After graduation ,I started practice in architecture for 9 years with new generation of architects in Iran like as “fluid motion architects” and “Bahram Shirdel and Associates”. that firms was small and experimental that means you most work on every part of a project from Pre-concept to detail design and that was very useful to me.

Nima Nian: I have been involved in many projects of varying scales; most recently I have worked in “Tabriz SMP Tower”, “Shafaf Competition” and etc.

Behdad Heydari: I have been involved with commercial and mixed-use projects in large scale. “Padideh- Kish competition” and ”Farmanieh mixed-use competition” was the most important of these series of projects that ,I participated on it.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Nima Nian: I am always investigating the relations between individuals and the public behavior. Questioning how it is possible to improve what we can call the collective sense of the individuals throughout the social environment and by means of architectural design. I think architecture is the means for building a better world and has the capability of doing so.

Behdad Heydari: Architecture to me is not just a profession. It is a work with a great possibilities. It could satisfy me and also could affect on society. Good architecture could improve people’s life on the other hand bad architecture or shortage of architecture could damage it.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Participation in architecture vision competitions for me is a good way to finding new answers for exciting problems in my context and a suitable direction to creating and detecting my own architec- ture language.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competition?

Behdad Heydari: If you choose them carefully you could exam your ideas and possibilities with the others in large scale and then you can increase your experiments in practicing architecture on a strong way and finally it cases to growing your architecture.
