We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the Honorable mention winner of our The Architect’s Stair / Edition #1 competition – Marie Astrid Orth from France!
Marie Astrid Orth
Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
I graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Grenoble (ENSA-Grenoble, French Alpes) in 1995. I primarily work in the practice and teaching of architectural drawing (at the Grenoble School of Architecture, Univeria School, and Efet-Créa School. I also work on interior architecture and design projects.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
I take on very small orders from both private clients and institutions. Since I primarily work with furniture and other objects, I can create 1:1 scale drawings. In any case, I do a lot of drawings, especially by hand, before starting completion.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
Architecture and furniture are our immediate, everyday environments. I approach it by first considering the most appropriate dimensions, just as a tailor would when making a well-fitting garment. I pay close attention to circulation to ensure it flows smoothly. I also consider usage, the placement of the body in space, and how to grasp or move an object.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Architecture and design competitions are excellent intellectual stimulants because they encourage more abstract and radical lines of thinking than actual commissions do. They allow us to explore "pure" architecture, free from the parasitic aspects of management.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
For those hesitant to participate in architecture competitions, my advice is to take the time to enjoy working on the substantive topics competitions offer.
