Simo Lahtinen

Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

I founded Studio Simo Lahtinen in 2018, and it is based in Helsinki, Finland. My background includes a Master’s degree from Aalto University School of Arts, Design, and Architecture, and my career has spanned a variety of roles in architecture, industrial design, and creative direction. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from large-scale environments to everyday products.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

I primarily focus on product design, but my background in architecture has influenced my approach across various scales. In the past, I worked as an industrial designer in an urban design department, contributing to large-scale projects. For me, the scale of a project isn’t as important as the opportunity to create thoughtful, functional designs. Whether it’s a product or a larger environment, I aim to craft meaningful solutions that combine aesthetics with purpose.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

To me, architecture is about creating spaces that enhance everyday life and connect people with their environment.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

I participate in competitions for the creative freedom they offer, allowing me to explore ideas and experiment beyond the constraints of commercial work.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Go for it, competitions offer a chance to gain valuable experience and experiment with ideas you might not explore otherwise. Even if you don’t win, the process itself can be incredibly rewarding and a great way to grow as a designer.
