We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the 3rd Prize winner of our Portugal Vez River SPA competition – Mariia Sviderskaia from Georgia!

Mariia Sviderskaia

Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

I’m an architect with three years of experience after completing my Bachelor’s degree. This year I started a Master’s in Architecture at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). I’m focusing on the technical side of water in architecture. I don’t have a company yet, but I hope to start one with friends called OMG. The success in this competition really motivated me, and I’m excited for what comes next.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

I specialize in wellness projects: retreats, spas, public baths, and pools. I enjoy this typology because it helps people recover both mentally and physically. In my work I design clear user flows and small “adventures” for visitors, while keeping comfort, safety, and ergonomics in mind. I have experience from concept to layout, detailing, and presentation across small to medium public programs.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is where analysis, culture, and creativity meet. The architect turns needs and constraints into useful, buildable spaces that also make people feel something: calm, curiosity, focus, or joy. Our role is to improve daily life with clear, efficient solutions and responsible use of resources.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

Competitions let me test ideas with fewer limits. The brief gives direction, but there is room to build my own vision. My main goal is to sharpen my design voice and grow a diverse portfolio. This process helps me engage with design more deeply and learn faster.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
