Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
We are third-year undergraduate students studying Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, we are immersed in urban projects that address diverse programmatic needs while connecting to the city's rich history and ongoing advancements that shape its identity.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
We have primarily focused on small to medium-scale projects. Our particular focus involves designing in a city with bylaws while creating opportunities for mixed-use to revitalize many of Toronto’s neighbourhoods by fostering community engagement, flexible spaces, and cultural hubs.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
Architecture is a plethora of stories, identities, and communities, where every piece of the built environment reflects the background and history of its inhabitants. In addition to being functional, the spaces we craft should evoke emotions and foster a sense of belonging. In our society, architects are visionaries who merge innovation with tradition. They play significant roles in shaping the future by addressing the evolving needs of communities while preserving cultural heritage.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Architecture competitions are opportunities for you to push your creative limits as a designer. Such creative freedom is rare in the professional world, so seize the opportunity! Moreover, architecture competitions expose us to a wider variety of building typologies, programs, and scales that are not fully explored in academia. As we continue to engage with a diverse range of design prompts and challenges, our understanding of the built world deepens further. Many projects from these competitions have been a source of inspiration, and by participating, we aim to contribute to that spread of inspiration.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
Do it! Participating in an architecture competition, regardless of the outcome, is a reward in itself. As architecture students and future professionals in this field, we are constantly learning from one other. These competitions strengthen your creativity, design skills, and your ability to communicate your project’s intentions. Team up with a friend or a group of like-minded designers! Architecture is never a solo endeavour, and working in a group not only improves your collaboration skills but also makes the experience that much more fun!
