things meet is an architecture and design studio based in Long Island City, NY. We deliver thoughtful projects from conceptualization through construction. We are strategic and creative about working with limitations. We produce work that is technically excellent and built to last. We create spaces that feel good and work well for our clients. things meet is led by Matthew Scarlett, AIA, NCARB, CPHC. Prior to founding things meet, Matt worked at Foster + Partners and TenBerke Architects (previously Deborah Berke Partners) where he led the design, execution, and management of several large-scale institutional projects. His professional experience spans 15 years working at all scales and project types with a focus on getting complex projects built. Matt received his Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University and his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a licensed architect in the states of New York and Rhode Island and a Certified Passive House Consultant.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

We specialize in institutional, small-scale commercial, and residential projects.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Above all else, we believe that architecture is the art of the possible.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

We participate in architecture competitions when the brief aligns with a continuing line of inquiry or area of interest in our work.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Participate if the parameters of the competition offer an opportunity for you to further your expertise in some specific way and focus on that specific aspect as a driving force when developing your proposal.
