Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
I am Xavier Arés, an architect based in Barcelona, and a co-founder of Asama Studio, a small architectural practice focused on innovative design and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our team consists of two architects who work closely with other professionals to deliver thoughtful and context-sensitive projects. I hold a degree in architecture from ETSAB and currently cursing my masters, complemented by an ongoing postgraduate degree in BIM management at LaSalle Universidad. During my studies, I received several recognitions, including the Hispalyt project competition first prize.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
At Asama Studio, we work on diverse projects ranging from urban renovations to smaller residential transformations. Notable collaborations include an architectural project in Espinelves, as well as a renovation of a historic masia in Granollers. Personally, I have also been involved in many projects over the years, also in Kengo Kuma and Associates as a former intern.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
Architecture is a tool for shaping environments that respond to human needs, cultural heritage, and ecological balance. For me, it is both an art and a social responsibility. Architects are mediators who translate the values, aspirations, and challenges of society into built environments, creating spaces that enhance quality of life and foster connection between people and their surroundings.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Competitions provide an opportunity to test bold ideas in a creative and experimental setting. They encourage collaboration, innovation, and reflection on current architectural challenges. Personally, I see them as a platform to refine my skills, explore new concepts, and connect with the architectural community while gaining visibility for meaningful projects.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
If you are considering participating, think of competitions as a way to push boundaries, build confidence, and grow as a designer. Even if you don’t win, the process allows you to develop critical thinking, improve presentation skills, and expand your network. Focus on learning rather than the outcome, and choose competitions that align with your interests or challenge you to think differently.
