"The fringe" is a design that aims to create an engaging festival environment by combining spaces for interaction, cultural elements, and thoughtful organization. The setting focuses on enhancing visitor experience while being mindful of the natural surroundings. The design organizes various areas such as a Residence Center and a food court, which together establish a lively atmosphere for all who attend.

Residence Center

The Residence Center acts as a central point for navigation, providing main and secondary paths for movement. It is placed in a way that allows visitors to move easily around the festival grounds. This arrangement not only makes the site more accessible but also helps create a sense of community, encouraging individuals to connect as they flow between different areas.

Food Court

The design of the food court emphasizes community engagement. It is an open area that invites attendees to gather and socialize. This space does more than serve food; it is a place where connections can form. By being centrally located and designed with communal interaction in mind, the food court enhances the overall experience of the festival.

Dome and Cultural Reference

A standout feature of the design is the Dome, which includes a roof inspired by traditional Latvian folk costumes. This element adds a unique visual character to the space. It connects the energy of the performance area with the peacefulness of the KHOR rest area. The cultural aspects woven into this design allow visitors to engage with the local heritage while enjoying the event.

Materials and Structural Elements

The project's materials include ETFE Film Roof Wrap, Timber Roof Support, Timber Vertical Support, Timber Wood Deck, and Timber Base Support. These materials are chosen for their durability and aesthetic contributions. The timber elements add warmth to the overall design, creating a sense of connection to the landscape. In contrast, the ETFE roof introduces a lighter feel, allowing natural light to filter through while providing protection.

The overall design features a roof that creates interesting patterns of light and shadow, enhancing the space throughout the day. Each element works together to create an inviting environment, where visitors can enjoy both the festival's activities and the beauty of the surrounding area.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
