The Turf Theatre is set against the rugged backdrop of Iceland, where the dramatic landscape plays a vital role. This design combines aspects of traditional Icelandic building styles with modern Nordic influences. The concept focuses on creating a strong connection between the structure and its natural surroundings. The theatre features a steeply sloped roof and black corrugated cladding that give it a notable presence. The turf walls create the impression that the building has grown from the ground itself, linking it closely to the landscape.

Design Concept

The approach to the design emphasizes sustainability and cost-efficiency. It employs traditional building methods that reduce the impact on the environment. This strategy minimizes disruption to the landscape while ensuring that the design remains visually integrated. The building's footprint is carefully planned to include multifunctional spaces, effectively using the site while addressing various community needs.

Interior Experience

Inside the Turf Theatre, the layout is crafted to encourage visitor interaction. Spaces are designed to be open and inviting, allowing for exploration. Materials like polished concrete and grey acoustic panels work together to create a cohesive look throughout the interior. Natural light filters in, enhancing the varied textures and making the space feel welcoming.

Spatial Configuration

The layout includes several dedicated areas, such as a movie theatre, an exhibition space, storage rooms, a reception area, and back offices. Each space serves a specific function while contributing to the overall design. This thoughtful arrangement allows different parts of the theatre to work together effectively.

Sustainability Features

A significant aspect of the building is its turf retaining walls, which help maintain a stable internal temperature year-round. The HVAC system is integrated into the roof and wall spaces, providing climate control that does not stand out visually. This detail reflects a commitment to both functionality and environmental awareness, demonstrating a practical approach to sustainable design.

Attention to these details ensures that the building respects its natural surroundings while offering useful spaces for cultural activities. The design not only serves the community but also acknowledges the unique Icelandic landscape.
