Utilizing tubular steel scaffolding, the design creates a transparent structure that fosters community interaction while seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a modular tubular steel framework for structural flexibility.
02
Incorporates multiple platforms to enhance varied viewpoints.
03
Features a large ground floor opening for community engagement.
04
Emphasizes accessibility with integrated lift systems.
05
Promotes sustainability through reconfigurable scaffold components.

The design reinterprets scaffolding as a primary structural element, merging human activity with the surrounding natural environment. Set within a vibrant landscape, the building focuses on transparency and openness, allowing it to integrate with its surroundings. The use of scaffolding highlights the vulnerability of human existence in nature while providing a versatile space that serves various functions.

Structural Framework

The tower features a tubular steel framework that adopts a modular approach, ensuring flexibility for future adjustments. This framework is organized around a fixed structural module, which helps to effectively manage loads and maintain stability. Various platforms are incorporated at different heights, allowing users to enjoy changing views and enhancing their connection with the landscape.

Circulation and Accessibility

Movement within the building is organized through a system of stairs and resting platforms, encouraging ease of travel and interaction among visitors. To support individuals with mobility needs, a lift is included in the design. This focus on accessibility aligns with a commitment to making the space welcoming to everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities.

Ground Interaction

An important feature of the design is the large opening on the ground floor, which creates a multifunctional area suited for various activities. This space invites community involvement and promotes social connections. By integrating the base of the tower with its overall design, the building enhances its purpose, creating an inviting and comfortable environment.

Material Adaptability

Sustainability is a key consideration in the design, especially regarding the reuse of scaffolding materials. The character of the scaffold joints allows for easy reconfiguration without sacrificing strength. Additionally, the use of folding polycarbonate and insulated panels at the upper levels supports seasonal adaptability, providing varying levels of visibility and enclosure depending on the weather.

The upper level is equipped with sliding carpentry and glass enclosures, which enhance the functional appeal of the space. These elements create a comfortable environment that responds to changing climatic conditions throughout the year.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
