The design features a contemporary residential solution that emphasizes adaptability and function. It serves modern professional couples and is situated in an urban environment. At its heart lies a unique concept that uses two independent rotating turntables, which create four distinct spaces: sleep, work, gather, and relax. This innovative approach allows for a flexible interior that can change to meet the various needs of its occupants throughout the day.

Design Flexibility

By using rotating turntables, this home makes it possible for areas to adjust for multiple uses. The bedroom can be easily hidden when the space is being used for social gatherings, showcasing the adaptability of the design. This thoughtful arrangement addresses common difficulties faced by those who live in compact homes, providing a feeling of spaciousness and functionality during different activities.

Exterior Aesthetic

The exterior adopts a minimalistic style, characterized by a simple shape that is both modern and unpretentious. The long walls feature floor-to-ceiling double-glazed panels, which invite ample natural light into the home and create a connection with the outside. This approach enhances the living experience by promoting a bright and open atmosphere while improving energy efficiency.

Sustainability Measures

Sustainability plays a key role in the overall design. The roof includes flush-mounted photovoltaic panels for energy generation, while an inset water catchment system manages rainwater effectively. A rainwater tank provides gravity-fed plumbing solutions, optimizing resource use throughout the home. Additionally, sub-floor services such as graywater and septic tanks align with current expectations for responsible and eco-friendly living.

Technological Integration

The integration of technology is evident in the turntable systems, which feature rotation motors and 360° swivel mechanisms. These components ensure that transitions between spaces happen smoothly. Furthermore, efficient LED lighting solutions are integrated throughout the home, offering adequate illumination while reducing energy consumption.

The design includes smart storage solutions that maximize efficiency, such as long-term storage areas and underfloor compartments. These features allow for organization and help maintain a clutter-free environment. Overall, the design achieves a balance between practical functionality and aesthetic appeal, catering to the needs of its residents while promoting sustainable living practices.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
