Reinforced Concrete Structure With Modular Units and Integrated Solar Panels for Affordable Urban Living

Project in-detail

A reinforced concrete structure with modular units and integrated solar panels addresses the need for affordable housing in an urban setting while prioritizing sustainability and community engagement.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reinforced concrete structure designed for seismic resilience.
02
Modular housing units that allow for flexible living arrangements.
03
Integrated solar panels to enhance energy efficiency.
04
Public staircase serves as a communal gathering space.
05
Permeable surfaces facilitate rainwater harvesting on-site.
This project represents an innovative approach to affordable housing in an urban environment, combining functionality with resilience to seismic activity. The design emphasizes modular living spaces appropriate for diverse family structures while integrating public areas that promote community interaction. The architectural layout includes interconnected blocks and a variety of configurations to accommodate single individuals, families, and people with disabilities.

The primary objective of this design is to create a sustainable, earthquake-resistant residential complex situated on a two-acre site bordered by key transportation routes, providing easy access to public transit while supporting a cohesive neighborhood atmosphere.

Efficient use of space is a hallmark of this project, reflected in its carefully planned massing strategy that divides the complex into a ground plinth, communal facilities, and residential units. The architectural plan facilitates not only privacy but also community engagement through thoughtful placement of shared amenities.

Unique Aspects of the Project

What differentiates this project from others is its strong focus on flexibility and inclusivity. The design includes various dwelling types, specifically accommodating singles, couples, and larger family units. This modular approach allows residents to adapt their living spaces based on their changing needs while encouraging a sense of community. The incorporation of multi-functional spaces enhances usability and fosters social interaction among residents.

The distinctive use of vibrant colors across building elevations contributes to visual interest, breaking the monotony often found in suburban developments. Additionally, the public staircase serves as an architectural feature that connects different levels and promotes gatherings, reinforcing the community spirit. The project's attention to landscaping and ecology, including the use of permeable surfaces and native plantings, enhances its environmental performance and provides aesthetic benefits.

Integration of Sustainable Practices

The design incorporates reinforced concrete as the primary structural material, ensuring durability in seismic events. The implementation of modular construction techniques allows for rapid assembly, minimizing waste and construction time. Furthermore, considerations for solar energy through the installation of photovoltaic panels on rooftops reinforce the project's commitment to sustainability.

Creating an inclusive environment is paramount in this design, with features specifically catering to accessibility needs. The adaptable housing unit layouts underscore the project's goal of addressing diverse lifestyles and enhancing livability for all residents.

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
