The Circadian Home is situated in the Anza Borrego Desert and focuses on the relationship between architecture and the natural landscape. It aims to enhance the well-being of its inhabitants through careful design that promotes a natural circadian rhythm. The residence responds to its environment, allowing light to play a key role in the daily experience of those living there.

Architectural Concept

The design principle behind the Circadian Home centers on the idea that natural light influences health and daily life. By maximizing light exposure during dusk and dawn, the home supports the biological rhythms of its inhabitants. Large northern openings allow sunlight to fill the interior, creating a welcoming and warm atmosphere throughout the day.

Light Management Strategies

Light management is crucial in the design of this home. Light wells and methods to bounce light within the space ensure that indirect lighting enhances the atmosphere without causing glare. The placement of windows takes into account the strong contrasts found in the desert light, allowing residents to enjoy comfort while minimizing unwanted heat.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the Circadian Home separates areas for working and resting. This separation helps create a balanced environment that encourages productivity and relaxation. The design supports the natural movement of light as it changes throughout the day, allowing inhabitants to connect more closely with their surroundings.

Materiality

Although specific materials are not highlighted in the presentation, the design suggests the use of local resources that can endure the desert climate. This choice reinforces the connection between the home and its environment, strengthening its integration into the rugged landscape. The careful placement of windows also enhances views while maintaining privacy and reducing the risk of overheating in the warm desert sun.

The thoughtful arrangement of spaces and the management of natural light reflect a commitment to occupant comfort, providing an experience that resonates with the surrounding land.
