The BOXSCAPE project located in the Sansusi Forest serves as a functional food court that incorporates elements of nature into its design. It stands out for its focus on modularity and efficiency. The concept involves three lightweight kiosks designed to be easily assembled and environmentally friendly. They provide a modern approach to food service in an outdoor setting, inviting people to gather and socialize.

Kiosk Design and Layout

Three different types of kiosks make up the project: Type A, Type B, and Type C. Type A measures 600 x 600 x 450 mm and serves dual purposes as a support pillar and vertical storage unit. This design provides stability to the structure. Type B, measuring 600 x 600 x 300 mm, acts as a work surface for caterers and offers additional storage beneath it. Type C, at 600 x 150 x 300 mm, is primarily a wall that also increases storage options. The arrangement of these kiosks ensures that they are both functional and space-efficient in the food court.

Construction Methodology

The kiosks use an open-sided design with plywood as the main material. This choice keeps the structures lightweight and simple to assemble. Each kiosk features five sides and pre-drilled holes, making it easier to join the components during construction. This straightforward assembly requires only basic tools, making it accessible for a range of builders, regardless of their experience.

Spatial Flow and User Interaction

The arrangement of the kiosks facilitates easy movement throughout the space. Entrances and openings are located to encourage fluid circulation. Between the kiosks, outdoor seating areas enhance social interaction, allowing visitors to comfortably gather. The design ensures that each kiosk is visible and accessible, creating an inviting atmosphere for users.

Sustainable Design Elements

Sustainability is a key feature of the project. The lightweight design reduces material waste and the environmental impact of construction. The roofs of the kiosks are supported by timber beams and topped with polycarbonate sheets, allowing plenty of natural light to enter while connecting the kiosks to the outdoors. This thoughtful approach helps create an inviting space that blends with the natural surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
