The design located in Melbourne focuses on providing affordable housing with a strong emphasis on community involvement and cultural integration. It seeks to change how people view affordable living by making it a shared celebration of the community's identity. By using existing urban spaces effectively, the design aims to create a lively environment that encourages interaction among residents while catering to a variety of needs.

Design Context
- Specific urban areas were carefully chosen for development, including busy locations like metro stations and underutilized parts of the central business district. This approach makes the best use of available infrastructure, minimizing the need for new land. The goal is to enhance the city's overall character while ensuring that it meets housing demands.

Artistic Integration
- Art is a significant element in shaping the living experience in this development. By drawing from Melbourne's rich cultural landscape, the design incorporates various artistic features that reflect individual and collective identities. These public art installations serve as a foundation for social interaction and community engagement, adding depth to the daily lives of residents.

Community-Centric Spaces
- The layout prioritizes communal spaces, creating opportunities for residents to engage and connect. These areas are designed for a variety of activities, encouraging people to come together and build relationships. By blending spaces for living, working, and leisure, the design minimizes feelings of isolation and strengthens community bonds.

Adaptive Structural Design
- Residential units are organized in hexagonal shapes, allowing for a flexible arrangement of spaces. This design can adapt to the changing needs of residents, accommodating various lifestyle preferences. Each unit is structured to provide both private areas and opportunities for communal living, ensuring residents feel at home while also being part of a larger community.

The combination of communal areas, artistic elements, and flexible housing layouts results in a rich living experience that enhances the connection between individual and collective aspirations, fostering a strong urban identity.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
