The meditation capsule project focuses on providing personal spaces for calmness and reflection in the busy urban landscape of Shinjuku, Tokyo. The design seeks to offer individuals a quiet retreat for meditation and relaxation. Inspired by local vending machines and capsule hotels, the structure emphasizes efficient space utilization, allowing users to practice various forms of meditation within a compact environment.

Conceptual Framework

Creating a personal sanctuary amid the chaos is at the heart of this design. Each capsule is designed for one person, allowing for different positions like sitting, lying down, or standing. This flexibility means users can choose what feels best for their meditation practice. Comfort and usability are prioritized, resulting in an environment that supports thoughtful reflection.

Spatial Organization

Inside each capsule, two main areas are clearly defined: an entrance zone and a meditation zone. The difference in elevation between these spaces is an important aspect, reminiscent of the traditional Japanese entryway known as "genkan." This arrangement provides a transition from the outside to an intimate indoor environment. Such organization enhances privacy and promotes a feeling of solitude that is essential for meditation.

Materiality and Sustainability

The choice of materials reflects a connection to both modern practices and cultural heritage. The outer layer is made of wood, linking back to traditional building methods and contributing to a natural look. An aluminum frame supports the structure, featuring sealed windows for efficiency. High-pressure laminate sheets and wooden cladding made from charred pine wood or stain impregnated are also used. These materials add to the visual appeal while supporting sustainable building practices.

Design Details

Functional elements include sliding doors that blend into the frame, maintaining a clean look. Frosted glass allows individuals inside to see outside without being visible to others, enhancing the sense of privacy necessary for meditation. The way light filters through the capsule creates a unique ambiance, providing a meaningful escape in the heart of the urban environment.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
