Framing Nature Through White Wood and Undulating Ceilings in a Cinematic Experience

Project in-detail

A white wood structure with an undulating ceiling frames views of the Hverfjall volcano and invites visitors to a unique cinematic experience within Iceland's rugged landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design features an undulating ceiling that maximizes natural light.
02
The entrance path obscures the view, creating a revealing moment upon entry.
03
Wood frame construction aligns with local building traditions.
04
Framed views of Hverfjall Volcano enhance the cinematic experience.
05
A hidden drainage system maintains clean lines and aesthetics.

The design is set against the rugged landscape of Iceland, close to the Hverfjall volcano and Mývatn Nature Baths. It serves as a venue for cinematic experiences, attracting visitors to engage not only with films but also with the surrounding natural beauty. The design concept emphasizes a contrast between the wild environment and the calm presence of the building, which takes the form of a simple white hut that stands out as a beacon.

Design Concept and Form

The architecture adopts a straightforward form marked by a white exterior that draws attention from a distance. This simplicity aligns with traditional Icelandic architecture while providing a clear connection to the landscape. The roof’s dynamic shape interacts with the terrain and creates framed views of the Hverfjall volcano, enhancing the experience for those approaching the building.

Interior Spaces

Within the structure, a thoughtful layout encourages movement between various spaces, including a lobby, lounge, gallery corridor, and cinema. Located on the north side, the entrance provides a path that first obscures the view outside. Once inside, visitors are greeted with a striking framed view of the volcano that adds to the anticipation of their cinematic experience. The lounge and lobby spaces are defined by an undulating ceiling that allows for natural light, creating a feeling of openness while fostering a connection between interior and exterior environments.

Construction and Materials

Construction techniques reflect local building traditions, using a wood frame for the external shell which coordinates with Icelandic practices. The roofs are designed with sloping forms supported by wood rafters. This straightforward design enhances both structural strength and visual simplicity. Additionally, a hidden gutter system alongside an in-wall drainage method effectively handles rainwater and melted snow, maintaining the clean design lines.

Design Details

Special features include a well-organized arrangement of functional areas that accommodate various activities. Each space is interconnected, allowing for easy circulation and a richer experience for visitors. As people move through the gallery toward the cinema, they encounter a flow that ties the spaces together. The way light enters through the unique ceiling design adds depth and atmosphere to the interior, contributing to the overall experience of watching films in this setting.
