Bach 42 is a residential architectural project located in New Zealand that embodies a modern interpretation of the traditional "Bach" concept. The design focuses on creating a space that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings while maximizing functionality and aesthetic appeal. The structure employs a straightforward layout that encourages social interaction among occupants and enhances the overall living experience.

The primary function of Bach 42 is to serve as a family retreat, promoting relaxation and engagement with the verdant landscape of the Coromandel Range and the Firth of Thames. The architectural design prioritizes open spaces that facilitate informal gatherings, with large glass panels providing unobstructed views and easy access to outdoor living areas.

Unique Architectural Features

One notable aspect of Bach 42's design is its incorporation of a dome-shaped ceiling. This architectural element not only elevates the visual profile of the interior spaces but also contributes to improved acoustics and airflow, further enhancing comfort. The use of local timber for cladding and engineered flooring aligns with sustainable practices, bringing warmth and texture to the home's aesthetic while reducing environmental impact.

Another distinctive feature is the strategic placement of outdoor living areas. Expansive decks seamlessly integrate with the landscaped gardens, providing functional spaces for outdoor activities while fostering a strong connection to nature. Additionally, the rainwater harvesting system and greywater recycling showcase the project's commitment to sustainability.

Functional and Flexible Design

The layout of Bach 42 is versatile, with spaces designed to accommodate varying activities and social dynamics. The multifunctional areas combine dining, cooking, and lounging, creating a cohesive environment that adapts to the needs of the occupants. Thoughtfully considered storage solutions further enhance usability without compromising aesthetics.

Natural light is a key design component, with large windows and motorized louvers allowing for control of heat and glare throughout the day. This attention to passive design elements underscores the effectiveness of the project in achieving energy efficiency while maintaining a comfortable living environment.

Bach 42 exemplifies modern architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings while addressing the functional needs of its occupants. It serves as a refined example of how traditional concepts can be reinterpreted through contemporary design approaches.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
