The restoration of the Dominion Foundry in Toronto, Ontario, is an urban redevelopment that addresses the need for affordable housing while honoring the site's historical significance. Located in the West Don Lands, the project involves several existing structures, including a foundry, warehouse, office building, and machine shop. The design concept prioritizes the integration of these historic elements into a contemporary framework, aiming to create living spaces that celebrate the past while meeting modern demands.

Heritage Preservation

The Dominion Foundry reflects much of Toronto's industrial history, and the restoration work strives to celebrate this heritage. Through careful restoration practices, the project will maintain the integrity of the existing buildings. The use of voids within the structures invites new experiences for residents, allowing them to appreciate the historical character of the foundry while enjoying contemporary amenities.

Sustainable Design Considerations

A strong focus on sustainability shapes the overall design. The project seeks to create a connection between the buildings and the surrounding natural environment. Thoughtful landscaping and the positioning of communal areas foster interactions with nature, offering an atmosphere of calm and relaxation for those living there. The design integrates green spaces that support both ecological health and well-being for residents, enhancing the living experience.

Community Engagement

The revitalization aims to create a space that encourages community interaction. The foundry is envisioned as a hub where residents can come together for social activities and cultural events. Open spaces will be designed to promote gatherings and foster a sense of belonging. By turning the foundry into a living, breathing part of the community, the project addresses the social aspects of urban life and the need for residents to connect with one another.

Concrete Utilization

Concrete serves as the primary material for key structural elements throughout the project. Chosen for its strength, concrete will support the modifications made to the existing buildings. This material helps ensure durability and stability, which are essential in an urban setting. The use of concrete aligns with the goal of preserving the original architecture of the foundry while providing the necessary support for new housing solutions.

The combination of historical preservation and modern living creates a thoughtful design that honors the past while accommodating contemporary needs. This approach provides innovative housing solutions in a setting that remains deeply connected to its industrial roots.
