The Kanso Capsule is a design focused on quiet reflection and meditation, situated in an urban environment in Japan. It embodies the principles of "Kanso," a Japanese concept that values simplicity and minimalism. The Capsule acts as a retreat from the busy atmosphere of city life, offering a place where individuals can concentrate on mental well-being and personal restoration.

Exterior Geometry
The shape of the Kanso Capsule is inspired by a mature tree, giving it a grounded and stable appearance. This form stands in contrast to the surrounding urban landscape, creating a visual anchor in a bustling environment. The design represents a balance, providing a sense of calm and stability, while also being moveable and adaptable to different urban locations.

Material Palette
Natural materials are used in the interior to create a peaceful atmosphere. This choice shows a commitment to sustainability and connects to Japan's rich craftsmanship tradition. A lightweight aluminum frame supports the structure while ensuring easy relocation. The material selection emphasizes a link to nature, enhancing the overall experience of meditation and relaxation.

Sustainable Technologies
The Kanso Capsule is designed with sustainability in mind. It includes off-grid capabilities, such as a micro-grid utility connection and solar panels, which help reduce its environmental impact. These features promote energy efficiency, making the Capsule a responsible choice for contemporary living. The design considers the user experience as well as its effect on the environment.

Functional Features
Practical aspects of the Kanso Capsule contribute to a meaningful reflective experience. A foldaway control panel provides guided meditation and controls for temperature and sound. Clerestory windows, made with tinted glass, limit outside light while maintaining privacy, allowing users to engage with the surrounding environment in a calming manner.

The Kanso Capsule illustrates how thoughtful design can provide a space for rejuvenation in a hectic world. By blending natural forms with user-focused features, it meets the need for a sanctuary, encouraging individuals to pause, reflect, and restore their mental balance.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
